DAY 2 QUITO – OTAVALO
The Otavalo Market is the most famous indigenous market in Ecuador and worldwide known for its handmade textiles and handicrafts.
The Otavaleños are indigenous people that live in the Valley of Otavalo, in the Province of Imbabura in Northern Andes of Ecuador. This is a very prosperous community of skilled textile weavers, who gather to sell their products at the market in the city of Otavalo as they have done for centuries, as regional markets have played an important role in their life, providing regular gathering places for trade and socializing.
The first day we depart from Quito on northward, via Cayambe, across the Equator line, and enjoy breathtaking views of the volcanoes nearby. We make a stop at Hacienda La Compañía de Jesús which was run by the Jesuits 300 years ago and now belong to the Jarrin family. The house was built in the French Neoclassic style in 1919 and it remains the same until now. El Troje was used by the Jesuits as a barn but now it has become a Roses Museum where you can find over 5000 stems of the most colourful roses from the hacienda.
During our visit to this farm, we will have the opportunity to see the different process of the roses harvest, from growing them at the greenhouse until they are packed for export. After this visit, we will enjoy lunch at the hacienda and then continue our way to Otavalo. We will stop at San Pablo lake lookout point to get a view of the Imbabura volcano and the beautiful lake San Pablo beneath. Overnight and dinner at Hostería La Mirage.
DAY 3 OTAVALO – QUITO
This morning we wake up with the first rays of the sun that appear East of the Imbabura volcano. An energetic and full breakfast will boost our day forward to visit Cuicocha, the impressive volcanic crater lake. We will take a short hike in the area, breathe pure air and enjoy nature at its best. Then we will enjoy Cotacachi, a cute little town and its leather crafts. We will continue to walk through the open-air Otavalo Market in town, where proud artisans exhibit kaleidoscopic weaving and crafts. It is this array of intense colours that have led to Otavalo’s reputation as the “rainbow market.” Textiles, rugs, carpets with typical Andean designs, hats and scarfs, as well as jewellery and ceramic handicrafts are all part of the display. A delicious lunch will be served at a country inn and afterwards we return to Quito. Overnight at Hotel Carlota
DAY 4 COLONIAL CITY TOUR OF QUITO AND MIDDLE OF THE WORLD WITH LUNCH
Quito and its vicinity offer a variety of alternatives to enjoy culture and nature altogether; here you will find some of the most popular and enrichment excursions.
Today we visit the colonial town of Quito, this area of historical importance is one of the most visited places in the capital city. The charming colonial churches are hidden jewels of the notorious Quiteño School of Arts of the 17th century, that built these temples with special care and dedication so that we can still enjoy today. We visit La Compañia church, beautifully decorated interior with gold leaf, a great expression of the Latin American baroque. We continue to see the traditional San Francisco square, the biggest in downtown and its monastery. We also marvel with bird-eye views of the city from the Panecillo hill at 9800ft high.
We continue on to visit the world-famous Equatorial Line Monument, located near the small parish of San Antonio de Pichincha, a place that is written with golden letters in the history of both Ecuador and the world. In 1735, a team of about 20 French and Spanish scientists, and other crew, departed on a most unlikely quest: to sail halfway around the world to determine the true shape of the Earth by measuring the vast distances between mountaintops in modern-day Ecuador. Their findings and experiments, among other things, came up with the “metro/meter” as part of the universal metric system. Here we get the unique chance to stand in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres at the same time, a great day to spend in this magical geographical point. A delicious lunch awaits ahead at the edge of an ancient dormant volcano Pululahua. The 180° views of the crater and valleys around is worth seeing. Our last visit is the Intiñan site museum where we perform some really interesting experiments that can only be done on the Middle of the World. Return to Quito in the late afternoon. Overnight at Hotel Carlota.
