Quito
is the home to beautiful cathedrals, elegant old mansions, interesting
museums, plazas and parks, and is filled with street markets selling
a wealth of Ecuadorian jewels, arts and crafts. This wonderful spring-like
climate is dominated by mountains, with several snow-capped volcanoes
standing majestically in the distance. It was also declared the
third most important world cultural heritage site in Latin America,
by UNESCO.
About a 30 minute drive north lies the invisible line called the
Equator, and also the famous monument, Mitad del Mundo, where you
can have one foot in either hemisphere. Two or three hours north
of Quito by bus lies the small town of Otavalo, famous for its Saturday
Indian market, which dates back to pre-Inca times, and where bargaining
has traditionally been something of an art.

Day 1.- (L D)
Start your trip through the Awakening Valley in Calderón
with its bread-dough figures and Cayambe for the local food specialties.
Passing by some of the most attractive artisan centers and Andean
landscapes, you arrive in Otavalo and its famous indigenous market
just in time to bargain for hand-knitted wool sweaters, colorful
tapestries, wood carvings, silver jewelry, native paintings, woolen
and straw hats, and much more. Lunch will be served at a typical
nearby hacienda or country inn. San Antonio de Ibarra, famous
for the woodcarvings and the town of Peguche where textiles are
woven in old-fashioned shuttle looms. Accommodation
Day2.- (B L)
The second day, after breakfast will visit Cuicocha and the town
of Cotacachi, an entire town dedicated to selling fine leather
products and many handicrafts. After lunch return to Quito.
